The Gold Standard in blogging since 1977...

Well, I finally joined the 21st century and signed up for some of that online banking stuff. Even though I'm a well established leading pundit in the software industry I've never really embraced using the Internet for transferring money, except for my old paypal account and that was nickel and dime stuff. But now, with the great interest rates they offer, and the flexibility they offer, I decided to make the move. I do like the efforts they make for security, namely the way you can enter your pin by using the mouse to click on a keyboard gui instead of using your keyboard - to get around any keyloggers that may be on your PC etc etc. Smart stuff.

I went back to the gym this week after a few weeks layoff due to a sore knee then the cold from hell and SWEET MOTHER OF FUCK, you'd think I'd been out for a year. Now before you get all worked up here let me tell you in all honesty that I'm in pretty good shape, like better shape than about 80 - 85% of the population I'd wager, so you'd think taking a few weeks off wouldn't mess with me too much but alas I've been huffing and puffing and sweating like a staffer at Opera's school for poor black girls. Crikey. What's the use of working out all the time when a few weeks off screws it all?

The Maulers continue to maul!

Frankly I'm surprised that 6 teams are behind a team run by a communist. I'd be damned ashamed if a commie beat me but maybe that's because I'm a true patriotic Americian citizen and not some mamby pamby tree hugging liberal. If you let a commie beat you you should be tied naked to the bumper of a USian GM car with a RED WHITE & BLUE flag jammed up your arse and dragged through the streets during rush hour.

I fired up my old Sparcserver 20 last night and while I still love the old pizza box, in a nostalgic sort of way, it's really really really slow (Even with the 1337 Ross Hypersparc 150 proc) and whatnot so I'm thinking maybe I should look at updating it to an old Ultra or something a bit more functional. Not that I'll part with the old SS20 mind you, nay, I have some idea that in 40 years it will be worth a bunch of money, like old Honda Model T's are. Anyways - I think I'll spend a few months researching the old Ultras to see which one is the best deal.

I've got a friend who is wondering if there's a way to tell how many credit cards you have in your name. He claims he got some cards right out of Uni that he used for a while then stopped using when he got some better cards but he doesn't think he cancelled them and can't recall what company they were through. I told him I'd ask the unwashed Husians to see if they know as I couldn't think of any way to do it.

Working out after a long layover and old computers by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #1 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 11:19:24 AM EST
Bob, I'm amazed, those are two topics in my next installment of my award winning diary. For you, here's a quick preview.

I just dropped a server room's worth (well, a small server room) of computers and monitors for free, to some recycling outfit. That's a Tercel full of solid waste that won't go into a landfill.

Damn you by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #2 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 11:22:26 AM EST
What kind of servers? It would have been nice of you to give your old pal Bob first dibs on junk like that.

roughly, a Mac LCII, a 386, two 486 and a Pentium. The Mac did have that cool rotating monitor that switches from landscape to portrait mode.

They should show up on at least one of his credit reports (if not all three). If he requests it I think he can specify whether the display includes full account numbers, but in any case it will display the creditor which should be enough to close them. If not enough years have past, they'll probably show up closed if that is the case too.

They do indeed show up on the credit report. Now my friend needs to get a handle on where the actual cards may be, assuming he didn't just toss them when they came in the mail.

Your friend can get free credit report. Just don't go to freecreditreport.com which is a junk marketing site that profits off of the fact that the credit bureaus in the US owe you a free credit report.

You're entitled to one free credit report from each of the three agencies once per year. It will have everything you're your friend is after.

I'll forward that link to my friend!

He was thinking he did the free credit report thing a few years ago (when they first started offering it) and it didn't have them on there but he's not real sure.

Boy - some of my friends sure are dopey!

You need all three by ad hoc (4.00 / 1) #11 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 11:57:47 AM EST
since the rules vary slightly. But if it's not on any of the three, it doesn't exist, by definition. They might be listed as "inactive" though, which means that if anyone tried to use it, it would be declined until you called their customer service line and got it reactivated.

I got report last year and found a Home Depot card that I applied for back in, like 86, to get an instant 20% off on something, that I never used and destroyed when it came. It's still on there.

Cards will stay on there after they've been canceled, too, at least for a while.

The free reports do not include your score, though. You have to pay for that if you want it (like, if you're going to apply for a mortgage or something.)

I don't feel the need to pay for my score as I'm sure it's pretty good. In fact yesterday I went to this site which estimates I'm between 775 and 825.

Seems like a scam that the whole credit score thing is this big mystery that you have to pay to get.

FF question by jayhawk88 (2.00 / 0) #10 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 11:52:33 AM EST
So in my pay league I have TJ HouseMozilla and Larry Fitzgerald as my starting WR's. HowsYourMomma has been pretty good for me all year, getting 10+ points every week save for this week. Conversely Fitzgerald has been a disappointment; he was good this week but only 3 times has he cracked 10.

I have Big Ben as my backup QB, getting me 30+ bench points every week sitting behind Romo (in this league we get a point for every 10 passing yards, it's ridiculous how important QB's are). Romo isn't seeing the bench the rest of the year so I offered Big Ben up for trade, hinting I was looking for a WR. I got an offer of my pick from one manager: Marvin Harrison, Dion Branch, or Steve Smith.

I'm thinking Smith is the only one worth considering here, as it's not looking like Marvin may be back anytime soon, and even when he was playing this year he wasn't putting up any kind of numbers. Smith though also seems like a gamble, as the Carolina QB situation is a joke, and Smith hasn't been above 5 points since week 6. But his upside is huge, as he's really the only legit Carolina threat.

Added to this is apparently the info that Smith has a hip pointer, and the other big Arizona receiver Boldin has some hip problems as well, meaning that Fitzgerald may be getting the bulk of the throws.

I'm tempted to pull the trigger on this and if nothing else just hope that Smith gets hot down the stretch, as my current backup WR Vincent Jackson is garbage. Of course then I have a decision each week on whether to start Smith or Fitzgerald, which could get me in trouble if I start chasing the "hot" guy.

Opinions?

Ugh by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #15 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 12:22:42 PM EST
You're correct - you can scratch Marvin and Branch (Branch??? he hasn't done crap on a team with a couple other good receivers) but I'm not even real sure about Smith. If Delhomme is still the QB then I make that trade but Smith hasn't done much at all since he went down. 4 of his 6 td's happened in the first two games so he's only had two since Delhomme went down. That's hardly anything special.

How bad does this guy need a QB? Big Ben is putting up some good numbers and at this time of the year I would think he should bring in a solid starter. Still, if that's the best offer and you're sure you don't want a backup for Romo then I guess it's not the most horrible trade you could make.

Warmest regards,
--Your best pal Bob

He started Huard this week by jayhawk88 (2.00 / 0) #16 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 01:18:27 PM EST
And has Rivers on his bench. Best 5 available free agents right now in the league are Pennington, Garrard, Lemon, Culpepper and McNair. I could probably get more for Big Ben but the thing of it is I really don't need much more. I've got Lynch and Thomlinson at RB, neither one is spectacular this year but they're solid. Shockey at TE, Gostowski is my kicker and either the Skins or the Colts on D depending on who they're playing.

I'm 7-3 right now, 1 behind the overall leader and tied with one other guy for the division lead. Last year I rode LT all the way to the title game but lost the championship because Martyball ran LT for like 7 points, and my weak WR's let me down with like 10 points combined.

I just haven't been really happy with Fitzgerald all year but haven't had any other options, but looking at that free agent QB listing almost scares me into keeping Big Ben; if Romo were to go down I'd pretty much be hosed.

look at your matchup against the league leader by alprazolam (2.00 / 0) #17 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 01:31:00 PM EST
figure out what player will help you the most that week. steve smith for big ben...you're getting jobbed on the one hand (and really helping that guy out) but if it's the best offer you got, maybe it puts you over the top..

[ Parent ]

That's my thinking by jayhawk88 (2.00 / 0) #24 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 02:06:03 PM EST
I'm not really worried about helping the other guy; he's 5-5, and while I do have a game against him still, the rest of his lineup isn't really that spectacular, and with two of us in his division at 7-3 right now it's unlikely he'll make the playoffs. Though looking at it I do play him the week RoethHamburger plays the Bengals, and he also has Willie Parker...that could be trouble for me.

But yeah my main goal here was to get a WR that would push me over the edge, and I figured dangling Big Ben out there would get me a pretty good offer from someone heavy at WR. Which it did I guess, but the more I look at it, the more I'm thinking Fitzgerald down the stretch might not be such a bad option. Sounds like Boldin will be hurt or hurting for the rest of the year, and Arizona finishes with Cinci, 49ers, Browns, and Seahawks, with the Saints and Falcons on playoff weeks. Even with Warner still a bit banged up, those are fairly favorable matchups.

[ Parent ]

Well by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #20 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 01:40:22 PM EST
Smith isn't much if any of an upgrade over Fitzgerald. He may have more upside, I wouldn't be surprised to see him have a good game or two down the stretch, but he's likely to be on your bench when that happens unless you take a lucky guess with the matchups.

So really this is more about depth than anything else. Do you think the odds of one of your starting WR's going down is more than the odds of Romo going down? Frankly in that case I'd hang onto Toothlessburger.

You've got a damn solid team either way.

And yep - I still have the RS6000 although it's been in the closet for a little while as I don't have a monitor for it since I upgraded to a digital monitor. I'm going to pickup a cheapy little monitor one of these days for it. That's one of the nice things about the RS6000 - you can use it with a regular VGA monitor. All my other nix boxen are run headless via tightVNC which works quite well truth be told.

I threw my HPUX box out this spring. Since I'm not developing on HPUX anymore it was just taking up space and the thing was a fucking brick, probably weighed 50 pounds or I would have given it away to some hacker but as it was the shipping would have been more than what it was worth.

I'd still like to get an old SGI box. Maybe an O2 or an Indy. Hard to find them in good shape, or at all on ebay anymore.

I was meaning to ask whenever you next diarized how the AM sweat shop was going, if there were new cuties at the rehabe centre gym, and if some doofus droopy-bags mom was bogarting the remote still.. So define "a few weeks" and what your new fighting weight is ...

And depending on the stats, "over 60%" seems to be the going rate now for overweight folks in the US of A, being fitter than 80-85% really just means you're only fitter than 20% of us non-fatties.

Solaris 10 x86 is free. No need for that messy sun hardware any more.. Unless you want to buy into proprietary hardware/OS combination computers.

No by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #26 Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 02:27:32 PM EST
The really chubby chick who brought her own remote doesn't come down anymore. No new cuties lately, usually just me and some russian dude who doesn't speak the language which suits me just fine.

Few = 2.5. Weight gain = maybe one pound. I didn't gain weight - just lost endurance.

Well - being in better shape than 20% of the non fatties puts me in pretty good shape, no? That's all the point was.

re: I've already got Solaris 7 and 8 for X86 but a friggin X86 box holds none of the charm of true sparc box. I mean, really. I've never met a PC that comes close to my SparcServer 20 for pure coolness.
