Having bad hair days since 1977...

Yesterday I downloaded Solaris 10 from the Sun website, all 5 gigs worth (I got the docs and extra software downloads too) and while preparing it for the final burn it dawned on me that the old Ultra 60 probably doesn't have a DVD drive. Duh. So I went back to the ebay listing and looked at it and wouldn't you know it, not only doesn't the darn thing not have a DVD drive, it doesn't have a CD drive either. That's odd, eh?

Now - I probably should have noticed this when I bought it but, well, you know. So I hopped on ebay and found a 32x SunCD for 25 clams and pulled the proverbial ebay trigger. I mean - you have to have a friggin CD for installing stuff unless you want to mess with installing stuff across the network which I don't want to mess with. Plus I bought one of those 13w adapters so I can (Allah willing) use it with a regular monitor, which will be a switch as I've never had a Sun box with a video card so I've always run them headless. So that was another 20 clams. Then I had to buy a Russian MailOrder Bride to play nethack with, so all of a sudden this 60 dollar Sun box has run me over 50,000 clams.

I'm looking at a 5 day weekend as I'm off from Thurs to next Tue. Of course tomorrow is the day we give thanks that back in 1492 Chris Columbus came over on the USS Arizona and defeated the iRaqii army, driving them back to Mesopotamia where they belong. Then that leaves 4 days to just screw off and do very little.

Speaking of ThanksGiving - I went to the Huge Hawk store last night to get some snacks for ThanksGiving and sweet mother of fuck, I've never seen so many stressed out people running around with giant turkey's in my life. Who waits until Tues to buy their turkey for Allah's sake? Anyways - I spent about 30 clams on cheese and crackers and salsa and chips and stuff and it dawns on me that I may have gone way overboard as it's just going to be me and my Dad. So we'll have lots of left-overs fer shur. Mmmmm, left-overs.

...trying to decide what piece of crap waffle iron or DVD player they were going to go stand in line at 4am Friday for the privilege of buying.

I had a waffle iron while at the Uni and I swear I must have made thousands of waffles with that beast. Mmmmm waffles.

make sure the nymph doesn't steal your Magicbane, IYKWIM.

How much spare freezer room do you have in your fridge ? See, the friggen turkey takes up a whole lot of room. And you have to thaw it before cooking, so if you buy it last minute, you only need fridge space. Buy it early, you need freezer and fridge space.

And don't forget we're also celebrating how Abraham Lincoln single-handedly defeated the japs in the battle for San Francisco.

Also, wish you'd said something about a CD drive. We've got a lot of excess "stuff" from the layoff hiding downstairs, all in a junk pile. There's prolly some real sun monitors (no promises) or even some SUN cd drives in it. I saw a few rackmounted SUNs and some desktops. All the HDDs and RAM were yanked, but CD/DVD drives may still be there. Would need a key from facilities to get in, but could look.

Thank you kind sir by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #5 Wed Nov 21, 2007 at 10:35:07 AM EST
If the one I bought doesn't work I'll let you know.

A real Sun monitor would be cool but those things were just fucking tanks. Prolly cost 50 clams to ship one. Unless you have some flat screen LCD's. Now that's yet another story.

Why didn't they sell that stuff to one of those liquidator companies? You see tonnes of Unix boxs with ram and HD pulled on ebay from those guys.

Warmest regards,
--Your best pal Bob

2 ypes of people wait until Tues to buy turkeys by lm (2.00 / 0) #3 Wed Nov 21, 2007 at 10:29:12 AM EST
  1. People who want salmonella because they don't have enough time to properly thaw the turkey before cooking it.
  2. People who buy fresh turkeys. Some of these may even wait until Wednesday. But most of these will have both already ordered the turkey and won't be shopping at Huge Hawk for their turkeys anyway.
And let me just say that should I ever be elected president of the union, I will not pardon the white house turkey. I will personally slaughter and butcher it the old fashioned way.

I had to park a quarter mile from the damn store - I've never seen the place so busy. I'd be afraid to even go near it tonight.

It really sucks as ever since they spent millions of dollars to renovate that store (the one close to the YMCA) it's been a real popular shopping spot. I liked it better when it was a dump and you could park up front and never had to wait in line.
